The low-calorie diet is an eating restriction for most people who want to lose weight. This is sometimes a misconception because VLCD often believes to aid in weight loss. The reality is that VLCD alone does not help you in losing weight. It will just cause various health deficiencies. The VLCD is allowed as long as your body does not run out of energy.

Consider a very low-calorie diet when you are doing the HCG diet. This is because it does not put your body at risk. HCG helps in finding your body a new source of energy instead of from the foods you eat. HCG works in a certain region of your brain to mobilize fat burning. The burned fats will be used as the source of energy during the low-calorie intake. That is why you are only allowed to do the VLCD as long as the HCG is in your system.

The VLCD of the HCG diet takes place during phase 2. This is also the time that you have to administer your HCG dose regularly. VLCD does not mean that you are not allowed to enjoy foods. This is the time that your food indulgences will be controlled and cut down. You have to adapt to new eating habits during phase 2. Always remember that you are only allowed to eat foods during lunch and dinner. This means that your breakfast will be water, a cup of unsweetened tea or coffee.

Sample VLCD meal plan for lunch and dinner during the HCG diet

LUNCH – You can choose from the following:

  • Tuna fish, with celery sticks and water
  • Chicken breast and peppers
  • Lettuce and shrimp or lean crab meat

DINNER- You can choose from the following

  • Boiled spinach, asparagus, or broccoli
  • Whitefish soup with asparagus o spinach
  • Chicken breast and tomatoes

Does hunger happen during the VLCD of the HCG diet?

Mild hunger is common especially in the first week of the VLCD. It is a normal response to your body while adjusting to the new caloric intake. The hunger will just be gone as long as the HCG took place in your system. This is due to your hypothalamus adjusting your metabolism. Your body’s energy depends on the amount of fat that is burned that serves as a source of energy. You have to maintain your intake of 500 calories daily. This is to help you reach your weight loss goal fast.

The allowed foods on the VLCD of the HCG diet

Food #1 – Lean, Fat-Free meat

Your daily meal on the HCG diet must have a portion of lean meat. The approved choices are fish, crab meat, chicken breast, lobster, and scallops. You are also allowed to have lean beef and pork meat. Make sure to weigh the meat choice and remove the visible fats before cooking. The lean meat has a high-quality protein that helps in keeping your muscles healthy. Lean protein also helps in curbing hunger and cravings. Lean beef meat is also the meat that is used to do your correction days or the steak day.

Food #2- Approved Vegetables

Certain vegetables are allowed on your very low-calorie diet. Various vegetables will help you maintain weight loss on the HCG diet. Vegetables can also be accompanied by lean meat choices. You can choose a serving of spinach, beet greens, broccoli, celery, lettuce, chard or cabbage. You can also enjoy asparagus, onions, shallots, radishes, and tomatoes. These vegetable choices are known to promote weight loss and your health. Vegetables are rich in nutrients and minerals that your body needs especially in losing weight. Take note that you are not allowed to mix various kinds of vegetables in one serving.

Food #3 – Approved Fruits

Fruits are low in calories and aids in weight loss. There are limited numbers of fruits that are allowed on the VLCD. This is because there are fruits that contain natural sugar and starch that may stop you from losing weight. The fruits that are allowed on the HCG are rich in vitamins and minerals. It helps to prevent and to fight against diseases. You can have berries, citrus fruits, apple, grapefruits, and oranges. You can also have fruits as a replacement for your sugary snacks. It curbs hunger and cravings, especially to sweet foods.

Food #4- Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices are naturally free from high calories. Herbs and spices are allowed as a natural means to add flavor to your food. This is to keep you from having processed food ingredients and flavorings. The HCG compliant recipes are lemon juice, salt, rosemary, and pepper. You can also add stevia if you are craving sweet foods. Stevia is a natural flavoring that releases sweetness without causing you to gain weight. It does not also affect your HCG diet.

The foods that you must avoid on the VLCD of the HCG diet

  • Dairy and high carb foods

You are not allowed to have cheese, ice cream, yogurt and milk during the VLCD. This is because it will affect the result of your weight loss. You will also find hard to lose weight if you eat dairy products. Avoid foods that are high in carbs such as bread, pasta, muffin, and rice. These are the main contributor to weight gain and obesity.

  • Fatty and oily foods

Fatty foods are allowed only during the loading phase of the HCG diet. However, it will be stooped when you embark on Phase 2. Fatty foods can stop the work of the HCG in your body. Oily foods increase your body and blood cholesterol levels. Oily foods are products that are highly processed.

  • Sugary drinks and alcohol

These are the foods that contain liquid calories. Your body cannot sense liquid calories as how it detects the solid foods. That is why you will gain weight fast when you indulge in these unhealthy beverages. Stay away from fruit juices, sweetened coffee, soda, and energy drinks. You also have to avoid alcohol because it is loaded with calories.
